How to Word a Tamil Wedding Invitation (With English Translation)

Guide · Zippite

Wording a Tamil wedding invitation well means getting two things right at once: a tone that feels warm and appropriately formal, and a structure your guests already expect — who is inviting, who is getting married, and when and where. Here are a few common patterns, with English translations, that you can adapt for your own invitation.

The traditional "hosted by parents" style

This is the most common structure for a formal Tamil wedding invitation, where the couple's parents issue the invitation on behalf of the families.

தங்கள் குடும்பத்தினருடன் இணைந்து, எங்கள் மகள் / மகன் [பெயர்] அவர்களின் திருமணத்திற்கு தங்களை அன்புடன் அழைக்கிறோம்.

Translation: "Together with our families, we warmly invite you to the wedding of our daughter/son [Name]."

The couple-hosted, modern style

More couples today write the invitation in their own voice, which tends to read a little less formal.

அன்பான நண்பர்களே, எங்கள் திருமண நிகழ்ச்சியில் கலந்துகொண்டு எங்களை ஆசீர்வதியுங்கள்.

Translation: "Dear friends, please join us at our wedding and bless us with your presence."

Adding the date, time and place

However you phrase the opening line, Tamil invitations traditionally state the auspicious time (muhurtham) clearly, since many families plan their arrival around it specifically, not just the general event time.

முகூர்த்த நேரம்: காலை 10:30 மணி

Translation: "Auspicious time: 10:30 AM."

A short closing line

உங்கள் வருகை எங்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி அளிக்கும்.

Translation: "Your presence will bring us joy."

Putting it together

A typical structure runs: who's hosting → the couple's names → the invitation line → date, time and muhurtham → venue → a closing blessing or thank-you line. If you're mixing Tamil and English on the same invitation (common for younger couples with multilingual guest lists), keep the Tamil for the warm, personal opening and closing lines, and use English for the practical details — date, time and address — so nothing gets misread by guests less comfortable reading Tamil script.
